Sustainable Development Goal 15 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is dedicated to “protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.” This goal underscores the vital importance of terrestrial ecosystems to human survival and well-being.
The “Future We Want” outcome document reiterates the significance of implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets adopted at the Tenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. These targets aim to preserve biodiversity, promote sustainable use, and ensure equitable sharing of benefits arising from natural resources.
Biodiversity has been a key focus in sustainable development discussions. It was a central theme during the 2012/2013 two-year cycle of the Commission on Sustainable Development. At the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, biological diversity was addressed in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation. The Summit endorsed the target to significantly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010, a goal also adopted by the sixth meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of Parties (COP).
SDG 15 emphasizes combating desertification and reversing land degradation. These efforts are crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems, supporting agricultural productivity, and ensuring food security. Sustainable land management practices are essential for preserving soil health and preventing further degradation.
Sustainable forest management is a cornerstone of SDG 15. Forests are vital for biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and providing livelihoods for millions of people. Protecting and restoring forests helps mitigate climate change and preserves the myriad benefits forests offer.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, from genes to ecosystems.

A healthy planet thrives on a rich tapestry of life. Biodiversity underpins ecosystem services we rely on.

Loss of biodiversity disrupts ecological balance and threatens the well-being of all living things
Achieving SDG 15 requires global cooperation and commitment to sustainable practices. By protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems, managing forests sustainably, and addressing land degradation, we can ensure a healthier planet for current and future generations. This goal is integral to poverty alleviation and enhancing the quality of life for all living beings on Earth
At ESG we’re a passionate group dedicated to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a global framework adopted by all UN member countries in 2015, serving as a shared blueprint to address humanity’s most pressing challenges.
