Sustainable Development Goal 10 tackles the critical issue of inequality. It aims to reduce inequality within and among countries, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
According to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Report 2015, Africa made great strides towards the eight MDGs. Sub-Saharan Africa registered the fastest progress among all developing regions, particularly in health and education. Northern Africa met many targets, including poverty and hunger reduction, universal primary education, and improvements in children’s and mothers’ health, as well as sanitation.

The child mortality rate in Sub-Saharan Africa declined five times faster during 2005-2013 than during 1990-1995.

Northern Africa achieved universal primary education and significant improvements in children's health.
Sub-Saharan Africa still has the highest child mortality rate globally.
70% of the population lacks access to improved sanitation facilities.
41% of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day.
Out of the 57 million out-of-school children of primary school age globally in 2015, 33 million were in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In the past two decades, Northern Africa has not seen improvements in women’s access to paid employment, with women holding less than one out of five paid jobs in the non-agricultural sector.
